About Old-School Naturalist
Old-School Naturalist is dedicated to fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world, promoting a constant sense of adventure, and encouraging curiosity and lifelong learning through art, storytelling, and firsthand observation. Rooted in the foothills of the Catskills in upstate New York, this work reflects the rhythms of the Northeast landscape, from the forests of the Catskills and Adirondacks to the waterways and trails of the Hudson Valley.
At its core, Old-School Naturalist is about seeing differently. It invites people to slow down, to notice the details of nature that are often overlooked, and to recognize animals not as background scenery, but as individuals moving through a shared environment. Through nature writing, wildlife photography, and field-based storytelling, Old-School Naturalist explores the relationships between people, wildlife, and place, with a focus on ethical observation, conservation awareness, and everyday connection to the outdoors.
This work reflects a modern approach to naturalism. While grounded in traditional field observation, Old-School Naturalist encourages compassion, responsibility, and engagement with the natural world. Whether documenting wildlife behavior, sharing hiking experiences in the Catskills, Adirondacks, and Hudson Valley, or offering guidance on what to do when encountering injured or orphaned wildlife, the goal is to create a deeper connection between people and the living world around them.
Old-School Naturalist is both a practice and a community. It is for those who find meaning in time spent outdoors, who are drawn to wildlife and natural landscapes, and who believe that curiosity, attention, and care can shape the way we experience the world. Through writing, photography, and shared stories, Old-School Naturalist continues to grow as a space for exploration, education, and a renewed sense of wonder.
